In the past when I read that John said that God is love (1 John 4:8), I understood the love he is referring to as something ethereal – something super spiritual and out there. I’ve often heard people say “God is love, but love is not God.” They are saying that the love we experience is different to the love that God is (in the Trinity).
This is not John’s intention with his words. He makes it very clear. He says the love we have for one another comes from God. And then someone who loves (people), knows God (1 John 4:7).
Our experience of God is not divorced of our experience of loving people. We know God, because we experience love… in people. God is not hiding, He is clearly on display. We just expect Him to look different.
