This man receives sinners

The words of indignation spoken by the Pharisees at actions of Jesus in Luke 15:2 made me think.

This man receives sinners and eats with them.

Think about this phrase. The Pharisees see that this man, claiming to speak for God, even to reveal his Father as He really is, this man receives unrepentant sinners. And eats with them. It makes sense that they would start uncomfortably mumbling. But by simply saying what they are seeing, they deliver one of the most concise summaries of the Gospel.

This man, the Son of the Father, the express opinion of God, the one anointed with the Holy Spirit – this man, likes sinners. He welcomes them, He seeks them out and He has communion with them.

This man receives sinners and eats with them.
